Moving to Nijmegen
Why move to Nijmegen?
Nijmegen is officially the oldest city in the Netherlands, with a history stretching back to Roman times. Located on the banks of the Waal river near the German border, it offers a unique blend of historic charm and a youthful, energetic atmosphere fueled by its large student population.
It's a city where history meets innovation, particularly in the fields of health and high-tech, centered around Radboud University and the Radboudumc.
Living in Nijmegen means enjoying the beautiful Kronenburgerpark, the lively Waalkade with its many terraces, and the surrounding natural beauty of the Ooijpolder.
Key reasons people move to Nijmegen:
Oldest city in the Netherlands with rich Roman history
Vibrant student city with a friendly, relaxed vibe
Stunning location on the Waal river and near nature reserves
Host of the world-famous Four Day Marches (Vierdaagse)
Use this guide as a starting point and verify time-sensitive details, including availability, prices, timetables, and municipal procedures, with the responsible organisation.
Finding a home in Nijmegen
The housing market changes daily. A fixed average price or general response time becomes stale quickly and says little about a specific home. Browse current rentals and homes for sale, compare several suitable properties, and read the complete listing at its original provider.
For every home, check:
- basic rent or asking price and every mandatory additional cost;
- contract duration, notice terms, deposit, and address-registration eligibility;
- energy label, heating, insulation, and likely energy use;
- floor area, outdoor space, storage, and accessibility;
- the real commute to work or study at your usual travel time;
- for a purchase: owners' association documents, leasehold, maintenance, structural risks, and financing conditions.
The provider remains authoritative for price, availability, and terms. Do not transfer money until you have verified the identity, property, and agreement.
Neighbourhoods in Nijmegen
Bottendaal, A trendy and diverse neighborhood located between the station and the city center. Very popular with young professionals.
Nijmegen-Oost, The most sought-after district in the city. It features wide streets, green spaces, and high-quality housing.
Lent, Located on the north bank of the Waal. This area has seen massive development, offering modern, sustainable family homes.
Centrum, The historic heart of the city. Ideal for those who want to be close to the shops, the Waalkade, and the nightlife. Mostly smaller apartments and studios in historic buildings.
Galgeweveld, Located near the University campus and the hospital. A mix of student housing and quiet residential streets, popular with those working or studying at Radboud.
A neighbourhood name is not a quality guarantee. Check the exact address, routes to daily services, and relevant municipal plans. Street and building conditions can vary substantially within one district.
Registration, contracts, and first checks
If you will stay in the Netherlands for more than four months, you normally register in the Personal Records Database (BRP) within five days of arrival. For a shorter stay, registration in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI) may apply. Book the municipality appointment early and confirm which original documents, legalisations, or translations your situation requires.
Before signing, confirm that residential use and registration at the address are permitted. Review the split between basic rent and service charges, inventory, check-in report, and maintenance responsibilities. Keep the listing, correspondence, payment evidence, and a dated inspection report.
Transport and daily routes
Nijmegen is a very compact city, making it a paradise for cyclists. The city has invested heavily in 'snelfietspaden' (cycle superhighways) connecting the center to surrounding areas:
Nijmegen is a 'Bus City' with an extensive network, including many electric buses.
The 'Snelbinder' bridge provides a dedicated cycling path across the Waal river.
The city center is largely car-free or restricted.
Parking in the center is expensive and limited. Most residents prefer a combination of cycling and public transport for daily commutes.
A route that looks short on a map can feel different at peak time or in the evening. Compare walking, cycling, public transport, and driving, including transfers, bicycle storage, and any parking-permit rules.
Work, education, and daily life
As a university city, Nijmegen has a very international outlook. Radboud University attracts thousands of international students and researchers every year.
For families, there are several education options:
- Radboud University: Offers many English-taught Bachelor and Master programs.
The 'Expat Centre East Netherlands' provides support for internationals moving to the region, including Nijmegen.
Ask employers and schools which documents they need and when. Families should investigate school and childcare options before committing to a rental or purchase.
Health insurance and finding a GP
Whether you need Dutch basic health insurance depends on your residence, employment, and study situation. If Dutch insurance rules apply, arrange coverage as soon as possible and no later than four months after arrival. Coverage and premiums can apply retroactively from the effective date. Check exceptions with the Social Insurance Bank or an insurer.
Look for a local GP after moving. Practices may use postcode catchment areas or temporarily stop accepting patients. Call 112 for a life-threatening emergency; for other urgent care outside normal hours, contact the regional out-of-hours GP service.
Practical moving checklist
- Set a maximum total monthly housing cost, not only rent or mortgage.
- Compare current homes and save promising active listings.
- Verify the source, address, provider identity, and every contract term.
- Plan the viewing, technical checks, and necessary financing.
- Arrange the municipality appointment, insurance, utilities, and internet around the actual start date.
- Record meter readings, keys, and the property's condition at handover.
